It started with a footnote.

Acclaimed leadership and business thinker Jim Collins said any company past year one should begin documenting its history and no later than year five, should write a short corporate history. To his mind, this was a mark of successful companies.

Problem is, almost none do.

When I stumbled across his quote in a footnote buried inside feedback from my business coach, I was reviewing every episode of the AfricanOptimist podcast, looking for what they had in common. The patterns were already there, in what interviewees kept circling back to without meaning to. I'd been recording the lessons but had never once named them. They were recalling them, but probably never documenting them.

That became the premise for all that was to follow.

The story is already inside the business. It just hasn't been captured, or codified, and therefore cannot be put to use.
